2010 Klondike Derby |

Absolutely frigid temperatures couldn’t keep 170 Boy Scouts away from competing in this year’s 100 Year
Anniversary Chillicothe District Klondike Derby. Twenty four sled teams faced and conquered ten event areas
and the challenges that were presented them while facing the single digit degree temperatures! The Scouts
stepped back in time 100 years to participate in events such as “Semaphore Signaling” and “Tracking and
Trailing”. A jeopardy style event was held with historical and current questions related to Scouting as well as
a Kim’s Game that utilized memorabilia as the articles to remember. Snow blindness created a true test in team
work when sled teams navigated through obstacle courses or tried to work as a team holding a rope to create
a perfect square. The teams had to rescue gold from a sinking bog and race their sleds without breaking the
precious egg cargo. Proper lashing and team work prevailed in bringing a large log over obstacles, and the ever
popular fire building to cook and eat pancakes! All the time navigating a compass course to successfully find each
event! Once again, a terrific time was had by all, but this could never have been possible without all the
wonderful staff both on the planning committee and out to help for the day! Your efforts were very much
appreciated! When a smiling Scout comes to you at the end of the day to offer you the Scout Handshake and
tell you “thanks” for a very fun day!! You know you’ve done your good deed!
